Camino de Santiago
October 1 – 13, 2026
Join Brenda Lorenz on the Camino de Santiago in October 2026. Imagine stepping onto ancient paths where every footstep echoes with centuries of history. The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, is more than a walking route—it’s a profound journey of discovery, spirit, and connection.
For over 1,000 years, pilgrims have travelled these trails to the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwest Spain, believed to be the resting place of St. James the Apostle. The city itself takes its name from him—Santiago meaning St. James and Compostela meaning field of stars.
Our trip starts in Madrid where we will take a train to Ponferrada and stay overnight. We will be taxied to Herreiras the next day where we will start to walk. We follow the Camino’s gold arrows up to one of the oldest sites on the trail, O’Cebreiro. We’ll spent some time exploring the ancient town before we are taken to the “Tractor Restaurant”. We will walk to Triacastela where we stay overnight. The next day will be our first full day on the Camino.
We will take a day off from the Camino and visit the historic town of Lugo, famous for its intact 3rd-century Roman walls. It is a blend of Roman, Celtic and medieval heritage.
At the end of our walk, we will have two days in Santiago. It is a beautiful city to explore, so much history. You can also take a taxi (arranged) to visit the end of the trail – Finisterre (the end of the earth) on your day off.
What’s included:
Accommodations - twin rooms at small 2 – 3 star hotels, small rural hotels with a private bathroom
Meals – all breakfasts - often this entails bread of some sort and coffee. I usually take a small jar of peanut butter to supplement their offering. Most suppers included. Lunches not included. Many small cafes on the trail to have lunch or buy something at shops.
Luggage – one suitcase (max 20 kg.) transferred daily. Personal tags will be handed out each day to attach to the bag. All you need to carry is a small backpack with water, rain gear, snack, sun screen, etc.
Hiking - This is not a typical LOC hike – no lead and sweep. This is your experience so it’s up to you to enjoy yourself, talk to other pilgrims, take a break to absorb the atmosphere, etc. Each day ranges is length from 13 to 24 km. The terrain is generally flat and you have the whole day to cover the distance so it really is not that difficult.
Health Issue – If for some reason you feel that you cannot hike for a day or so, I will call my contact in Spain and he will arrange for transfer to take you to the next stop. You will have to pay the driver for the trip.
Transportation – We will leave Toronto on September 30 and arrive in Madrid on October 1. The train to Ponferrada is included in the cost. At the end we will take the train (included) from Santiago to Madrid. We stay at the Madrid airport (included) and then leave Madrid on October 14 for home.
Cost – For 6 or more people the cost is CDN$3600 per person. You will be asked to pay a 25% deposit (CDN$900) to Teacher’s Travel. The remainder will be due August 1. This information will be provided later.
There are 7 spots available.
